BACKSTORY
Born the only child of well-off middle-class parents, Orochimaru lead a materially comfortable yet emotionally unfulfilling childhood. His father, a local accountant, and stay-at-home mother were happy in their suburban life, yet found it difficult to keep their intellectually gifted son occupied or relate to him emotionally. Also finding it difficult to relate to other children his age, Orochimaru was moved through a variety of "special" programs at local elementary schools, until finally being accepted into a rigorous accelerated program. While Orochimaru thrived on the intellectual stimulus, the level of the program often left Orochimaru studying by himself with a private tutor, further depriving him of a normal social interaction.
Orochimaru moved through the grades quickly, finishing high school at the age of twelve. As the years went on, Orochimaru had become more and more estranged with his parents, and a full scholarship to college on the other side of the country effectively cut off their relationship. Orochimaru soon found he had even less interest in his new classmates than in his parents, but the discovery of a penchant for cutting up dead rodents soon lead to a major in Biology.
Not particularly enjoying the "real world", Orochimaru spent many, many more years in higher education and eventually wound up with a medical degree. While immensely fascinated with surgery, Orochimaru was gently pushed by his peers towards medical research, lest he actually be allowed to go near real people. Generally preferring cadavers anyway, Orochimaru began his career as a researcher at the university he graduated from, and eventually started lecturing. Orochimaru found his interest in college students had significantly increased since his own time in the dorms, though couldn't quite work out why no one ever wanted to come to his office. Surely it had nothing to do with his pet boa-constrictor, Manda, whose tank is right behind the desk.
Orochimaru is often regarded as his peers as a little odd, but his strange and somewhat perverse fascination with youth and habit of wearing full stage makeup at all times are generally overlooked in the wake of his genius.
